Once upon a time, a long time ago, in 1966 to be precise, I found myself moving with my Dutch parents from Canada to Iowa. Thus, through no fault of my own, I found myself with several difficult questions to answer.

  1. As an immigrant with parents whose parents had been immigrants and who were immigrants themselves, would I find it possible to fit in? Would anyone want to be friends with the outcast?
  2. As an undersized girl, what is the best way to deal with bullies? Join them? Ignore them? Fight them? or RUN!!!
  3. As someone whose first language was Dutch, who actually likes Dutch food, and who is close to her family, is it okay to be proud of, and even enjoy, my heritage and family?

In this middle grade, often humorous, and sometimes sobering book, the reader will be able to follow Carrie from fourth to sixth grade, learning through her experiences that is is not only okay to be yourself, it is vital.

The book is not yet finished, but watch for it…
